He completed his school education in Gondal itself and moved to Rajkot City for joining Dharmendrasinhji Arts College in 1940. He didn't complete his college and left midway to participate in Quit India Movement of Indian independence movement. Later moved to Mumbai, India and became editor of Kumar (1944–45), Urmi Navrachana (1946), Sangam, Parmarthi magazines and Jai Hind daily.
In 1987, he returned to Dharampur near Valsad and established Nandigram for the welfare of Adivasi people and as a spiritual centre. He was sometimes known as Sai or Sai Makarand Dave. He was awarded Ranjitram Suvarna Chandrak (Highest award for Gujarati Literature in 1979. He later received Sahitya Gaurav Puraskar, Narsinh Mehta Award, Aurobindo Award for philosophical and other works.

Gujarati Poetry has come through a long tradition which has its roots in Apbhramsa and Prakrit poetry which starts from Hemchandracharya, a poet from 11th – 12th century; passing through the great period of Bhakti Poetry, Bardic Poetry, Reformation Age, Pandita Yuga, Gandhian era and Post-Gandhian Era before it found its new form in modern age. The Gujarati poetry has gone through a great transformation in terms of language, style, prosody, expression and forms.
Makrand Dave is one distinguished poet of modern age whose range of writing runs through all the ages that Gujarati poetry witnessed. The ancient meters like ‘dohra’, ‘Savaiya’ are found in his poetry alongside the most modern forms like verse libre, ghazal and sonnet.
