  • Malti Joshi, a celebrated writer and recipient of the Padma Shri award, died at the age of 90 on Wednesday. Joshi had been battling cancer for some time and breathed her last at her son Sachchidanand Joshi’s residence in Delhi. Sachchidanand Joshi, a distinguished litterateur, serves as the member secretary of the Indira Gandhi National Center for the Arts (IGNCA).

Throughout her career, she authored more than 60 books and was honored with the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2018 for her significant contributions to literature.

    NEW DELHI: Renowned Hindi writer Malti Joshi passed away at her residence on Wednesday. She was 90 and battling esophagus cancer, a press release said.
    Aurangabad-born Joshi, who also wrote in Marathi, had received the Padma Shriin 2018.

    Noted Hindi writer Mridula Garg said that the most unusual and riveting feature of Malti Joshi's story writing was that she would narrate them verbatim in public instead of reading from the printed page like the katha vachak of epics and historical tales. “It gave them a unique tonal quality and showcased, not only her prodigious memory but also her command over tenor and melody of the text. No wonder she had such a vast readership,” Garg said.
